Audition Info


Thank you for your interest in the study of tuba or euphonium at University of Central Arkansas! Here’s what you need to do:

1. Apply to UCA. You may audition for the UCA Music Department without applying to the University first, but you won’t find out your audition results or be considered for a scholarship until you’ve officially applied to the university. You can apply at

Prospective Student Application

Then, fill out and print a Scholarship Application Form. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you MUST fill out this form and submit with your Music Department application.

 3. Prepare for the audition! Preparatory lessons are available and encouraged with Prof. Carichner. You can contact him at: or call him at 480-686-7885. Aside from that, here is the list of suggested materials for the audition:

•One complete, multi-movement work (concerto, sonata, or suite) from any historical period, e.g. Vaughan-Williams Concerto for Tuba, Gregson Concerto for Tuba, Broughton Concerto for Tuba, Hindemith Sonata, Marcello Cello Sonatas 1 or 2, Haddad Suite for Tuba, Wilder Effie Suite, Stevens Sonatina,

•Two shorter works or etudes in contrasting style (may be individual movements from longer works). e.g. Etudes: Kopprasch, Blazhevich, Rochut/Bordogni, Tyrrell, Gallay, Arban)

•All major scales, in quarter notes, quarter = 120 minimum

ALL materials may be requested at the audition, including sight-reading and a brief aural skills evaluation. Prepare thoroughly, and do not hesitate to contact Prof. Carichner or the music office with questions.
