New Consortium for Tuba/Euphonium and Wind Band

“GOOD COP/BAD COP” FOR TUBA/EUPHONIUM SOLO AND WIND ENSEMBLE

FOR SOLO TUBA OR EUPHONIUM AND WIND ENSEMBLE

GOAL:

To commission composer William Pitts (www.williampittsmusic.com) to compose a new concerto for tuba or euphonium and wind band.  William is a young force in the wind band world, and has had works commissioned and performed by ensembles at University of North Texas, University of Alabama, University of Georgia, Emory University, UNC Chapel-Hill, and many others.

INSTRUMENTATION:

The new work will feature a virtuosic solo tuba or solo euphonium, accompanied by a standard instrumentation wind band.  Christian has asked the composer to create a solo part that would be originally for tuba, but also with euphonium (up one octave) in mind.  Having seen the rough draft, the solo part works equally well on tuba or euphonium.  The wind band parts will be playable by quality high school bands to ensure broad appeal and multiple performance opportunities for the soloist.

THE CONCERTO:

The work is to be a “fast-slow-fast” one-movement concerto that is eight to ten minutes in length.

WHO:

This consortium is being led by Christian Carichner, Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Central Arkansas, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the UCA Band program.  The work is slated to be premiered by Christian Carichner and the UCA Wind Ensemble at the Meyerson Center in Dallas, TX in April 2014.

PARTICIPATION:

Individual commissioners can contribute for just $75.  At this level, you will be listed as an individual commissioner in the published score, and also receive a published version of the tuba (and euphonium) solo with piano reduction accompaniment.

Ensemble or “Premier” commissioners contribute at the $250 level.  This also lists you as a commissioner in the published score, and you will receive a published set of wind band parts, score, and tuba/euphonium solo.

Additionally, Christian will offer to perform the concerto with your ensemble (schedule permitting) as part of the Ensemble or Premier level.  While many individuals and colleges may elect to choose their own performer, this offers high school bands a chance to bring in a guest clinician at no additional cost.

EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE RIGHTS:

Commissioners have exclusive performance rights through May 15th, 2014 at which time the piece will become available for purchase by the public.

TIMELINE:

October, 2013 – Consortium goes live and is open to contributions and commissioners.  Composition/sketching of work is already underway.

November, 2013 – Work is expected to be completed in tuba/piano format.

January, 2014 – Scores will be delivered to all commissioners.

April, 2014 – Official World Premier at the Meyerson Center in Dallas, TX with the UCA Wind Ensemble – Ricky Brooks, Conductor.
